Eligibility

Age 65+: Most people qualify based on work history (you or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years).
Younger retirees may qualify earlier due to disability or certain medical conditions (like end-stage renal disease or ALS).

Medicare Has Four Parts

1. Part A – Hospital Insurance

Covers:
Inpatient hospital care
Skilled nursing facility stays
Hospice care
Limited home health care
Cost:
Usually free if you paid Medicare taxes while working.

2. Part B – Medical Insurance

Covers:
Doctor visits
Lab tests, X-rays
Preventive care (e.g. screenings, flu shots)
Outpatient services
Durable medical equipment
Cost:
Monthly premium (about $174.70 in 2025 for most people)
Deductible and 20% coinsurance for most services

3. Part C – Medicare Advantage

An alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurers.
Includes:
All Part A and B services
Often includes Part D (drug coverage)
May offer extras like dental, vision, hearing
Cost:
Varies by plan. You still pay your Part B premium.

4. Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage

Covers:
Prescription medications
Plans vary in cost and what drugs are covered
Cost:
Monthly premium (varies by plan and income)

Dental, vision, and hearing (unless included in Advantage plan)
Overseas medical care
Cosmetic procedures

Extra Help: Medigap (Medicare Supplement)

If you choose Original Medicare (Parts A & B):
You can buy a Medigap policy from a private insurer.
Helps pay out-of-pocket costs (like copays and deductibles).
Does not work with Medicare Advantage plans.

When to Enroll

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your 65th birthday.
If you delay retirement and keep employer coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when that coverage ends.
